Arrogance

If you're wondering why the Bush administration was/is so mind-bogglingly arrogant that it thought/thinks it would get away with one outrageous fraud after another after another (and really, it can't be said often enough what an insanely great job Josh and his team are doing), look no further than Glenn Greenwald's piece today. (Salon.com: you can watch a short ad, but subscribe; they're worth it.) They were arrogant because they successfully played so many people for fools, so many times -- starting from the very beginning.

nah nah nah i'm not listening to you

This guy picked a bad day to be outraged by the malpractice of judges, but his story is still worth reading:

"The last few times that I sued a spammer in Washington Small Claims Court, I filed a "booby-trapped" written legal brief with the judge, about four pages long, with the second and third pages stuck together in the middle. I made these by poking through those two pages with a thumbtack, then running a tiny sliver of paper through the holes and gluing it to either page with white-out. The idea was that after the judge made their decision, I could go to the courthouse and look at the file to see if the judge read the brief or not, since if they turned the pages to read it, the tiny sliver of paper would break. To make a long story short, I tried this with 6 different judges, and in 3 out of 6 cases, the judge rejected the motion without reading it."

Water wet, etc. But still worth fighting. The big stuff is all about the little stuff.

internet radio not fade away

This is ridiculous. (Not the appellate ruling, but the entire situation.) Tell your Reps.

brave sir robin

God I hate these people sometimes.

And it's not because they have this opinion. It's certainly anyone's right to think that a little more bravery is in order. I hate them because they choose to air this opinion in front of large audiences, within 48 hours of the senseless deaths, and because very likely they secretly delight in the thought that maybe some of the parents of the dead "cowards" will read their words and be appalled and hurt -- because that's what posts like these are designed to do. Everybody knows that bravery is good and apple pie. These posts aren't for having a reasonable discussion about the state of culture and how it does or doesn't promote chivalry. They're designed to generate some heat, so someone will be outraged and say so in the comments or on another blog, so that the posters can throw up their hands and say, "Look! All I did was say what I think, and all these people can do is try to shut me up!" And now look who gets to play victim. Again.

"Come and see the violence inherent in the system! Help help, I'm being oppressed!"

Here it is put another way, without any apparent irony. (As an aside, I think TK is brilliant sometimes. But sometimes ... what an ass. Eh, whatever sells, apparently.)

things that are great

XM Radio. It's like Microsoft Word: way too many options for any human, but don't you fuck with the 20% I use, and everyone's 20% is different.

Yes, there will be an irregular, ongoing series of such childish posts.

not iyet in imusic iheaven

When I finally get an iPod or whatever, the first thing I'm gonna have to do is load up every Jackson Browne recording known to Man and the Internets and give myself some songwriting lessons. Jesus can that guy write.

P.S. In case you haven't figured, this place is gonna be pretty random. As I tell my almost-5-year-old every time we get on a plane, this is a no-smoking, no whining, no complaining flight. So, welcome.

stupid stupid "w" word

Why does Left Blogistan's favorite epithet have to be wanker? Such a goddamn Euro word. Couldn't we please think of something a little more American-sounding to replace it with?

Forget the lame, untenable codes of conduct. (Or should that be "fuck the ...") (Go find the links if you want 'em; I'm not sullying this blog with that stuff.) If the Left is going to be Taken Seriously by the Right, the Left ought to set some Ground Rules. Rule #1: if you can't imagine it coming out of Springsteen's mouth, you don't make the word part of your political vernacular.
